Description

A group of three small single storey terrace houses of probable pre-1834 construction, located on the east side of Church Street north of Portaferry town centre.

Number 25 has a modern timber panel and glazed door with plain fanlight at the centre of its west-facing front façade, flanked by two-pane PVC windows with small upper panes on top hung hinges. To the rear are two mono pitch single storey returns facing each other across a box gutter. The front façade is finished in lime render and painted, with paint used to simulate a plinth. It has an eaves course, stone cills, cast iron gutter and downspout. The gabled roof is covered in Bangor Blue slates.

Number 27 has a circa 1960s timber and glazed door at the centre of its front façade with sash windows to either side. The front façade is finished in lime render and painted, with paint used to simulate a plinth. It has an eaves course, stone cills, cast iron gutter and downspout. To the rear is a modern glazed and panelled timber door at the centre with modern timber windows either side. The gabled roof is covered in Bangor Blue slates.

Number 29 is a single fronted house with a modern panelled and glazed door to the left and window to the right, both with modern frames. This façade is finished in lime render and painted, with paint used to simulate a plinth. It has an eaves course, stone cills, cast iron gutter and downspout. The rear façade is obscured by rampant undergrowth. The gabled roof is covered in asbestos-free slates.

The buildings occupy a site identified on Patrick O'Hare's 1799 map of Portaferry as the possession of Edward Smyth, James Wallis and William Agnew. The present dwellings may represent, at least in part, those indicated in 1799. All three were exempt from rating at the time of the first valuation around 1835-1838 and are therefore not recorded in the valuation returns. The group stands within a conservation area.
