Description

Site of former terraces of single and two storey houses and cottages of probable pre-1834 construction, now completely demolished with modern dwellings of uniform style but varying proportions built in their place.

The terraces formerly occupied numbers 72-110 and 104-154 Shore Road, facing Strangford Lough. According to a survey conducted in March 1970, the buildings comprised three distinct groupings:

Numbers 104, 106, 108 and 110 formed a single storey terrace with slated roofs and roughcast walls. Doors were sheeted and windows were drop-hung with no astragals. Numbers 108 and 110 featured plain architraves and keystones. Numbers 104, 106 and 108 had roofs in poor condition.

Numbers 112-134 comprised a single storey terrace with slated roofs, walls of roughcast or rendered and lined finish, and sheeted doors. Windows were drop-hung with no astragals. Numbers 132 and 134 were recorded as dilapidated with broken roofs. Number 124 had architraves and a keystone. Numbers 136-154, with the exception of number 136 (which was two storeys), formed a single storey terrace. Numbers 142-146 had all openings blocked. Numbers 152-154 were positioned at an angle with Little Cook Street. Roofs were generally slated and in poor condition. Walls were generally roughcast and painted. Windows were drop-hung and doors were sheeted. Number 148 had a simple fanlight. The survey noted the buildings were of generally poor quality.

The terrace was shown on Patrick O'Hare's 1799 map as 'New Cook Street', depicting a mixture of seemingly quite large and very small individual sites with buildings. The terrace was demolished around 1972, with new houses constructed in 1972 and 1973.
