Description
A pair of single-story, hipped-roof dwellings, likely built as estate worker's cottages in the early 1800s, possibly around 1807 to approximately 1830. The block is situated beside the Newtownards Road, less than a mile north of Greyabbey, and sits at a slightly lower level than the road. Both houses are finished with rough cast render and feature a slated, hipped roof with three evenly spaced brick chimney stacks. Number 95 has replacement PVC windows and doors, while number 97 has PVC to its doors.
The front elevation of number 95, facing east, is asymmetrical, with a timber and glazed stable door positioned slightly left of centre, along with a modern two-pane timber window to the left and two to the right. A similar window is present on the eastern elevation. The rear includes two squat windows to the left and a small gabled return to the right; the return’s eastern elevation has a plain timber door and a window similar to those on the front. A large three-pane timber window is set into the gable of the return. Number 97's front facade mirrors its neighbor's style, with a similar door, but its windows are casement style. A modern three-pane timber window is visible on the west elevation. The rear of number 97 has a small gabled return to the left, with a small, flat, corrugated-roofed porch projecting from the intersection of the main house and the return. This porch has a multi-pane window on its west side and a timber-sheeted door to the north, while the return features a three-pane timber window to the west and on its gable. A metal six-pane window is located to the left on the main house’s rear elevation.
The block is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, although the returns were not shown at that time. Historical records, including a copy of an 1807 map found within the Londonderry Papers at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), confirm the houses were built on land belonging to the Londonderry estate.
