Description

Two storey gabled terraced grouping of mid-19th century origin, consisting of a public house (Nos.44-46) to the left and a dwelling (No.48) to the right, positioned on the north-east side of Main Street in the village of Kircubbin.

The pub frontage at the far left of the ground floor features multi-paned curved timber windows projecting slightly on either side of a timber door with decorative fanlight and a now-boarded former sidelight. Rendered stall risers frame the windows. The shop front is encased with pilasters and console brackets supporting a wooden sign with raised gold painted letters. To the right of the shop front are timber-sheeted double doors with a wicket door, set within a large segmental arch coach opening. A large modern six-pane window with top hung central opening occupies the ground floor to the right of this. The entrance to No.48 consists of a plain timber door with semicircular fanlight and keystone, framed with pilasters whose console brackets and the keystone support a cornice. To the right is a sashed window with moulded surround featuring a distinctive fluted frieze and cornice above. The first floor contains seven windows matching the ground floor arrangement at the far right, all resting on a cill course.

The facade is finished in lined render with chamfered quoins and plinth, while the exposed gables are rendered. The pitched roof is covered with asbestos-free slates and features three corbelled yellow brick chimney stacks with matching pots. Cast iron rainwater goods are present.

The site is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, possibly corresponding to the buildings visible today. A photograph dating from circa 1910 demonstrates that the pub front at No.44 remains virtually unchanged, but shows that a house doorway adjoining this front to the right (the entrance to No.46) has since been obliterated by the widening of an alleyway to the rear, creating the present large coach arch. A small shop front at what appears to be No.46, located to the left of the entrance to No.48, has been replaced by the large modern window. The decorative surrounds to the ground floor window at the far right and to the first floor windows are probably of late Victorian date.
