Description
A group of three, two-storey vernacular terrace houses, likely dating from around 1860, features sandstone facades and modern window frames and doors. The terrace is situated on the east side of Belfast Road, west of Comber town centre. Number 1 is positioned at the southern end, built on a corner angle.
The front (west) facade of Number 1 features a timber-sheeted door with a small glazed panel encased within a painted stone surround and cornice, centrally located on the ground floor. To the right of the door is a window with a PVC frame; further to the right is an elliptical-headed carriage arch with brick dressings and timber-sheeted double doors. The first floor mirrors the ground floor arrangement with three windows. The rear facade is smaller due to the corner angle. At the rear, the ground floor features the rear of the carriage arch to the left, followed by a small window with a PVC frame. The first floor has two slightly larger windows with matching frames. A side door, similar to the front door but with a diamond-shaped panel, is located within the carriage arch.
Number 3's front facade has a doorway similar to that of Number 1, positioned on the right side. To the left of this doorway is a window with a modern frame, and two similar windows are located on the first floor. The rear ground floor has a modern door to the left and a small window with a modern frame to the right. The first floor features a slightly larger window and a small window to its right, both with modern frames.
Number 5’s front facade mirrors Number 3, but is a reversed layout. The ground floor has a modern lean-to extension to the rear, and the first floor has two windows as the rear first floor of Number 3, but in reverse orientation.
The facades of all three houses are constructed from sandstone, and the gabled roofs are covered in natural slate. There are three brick chimney stacks. The rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and PVC, with Number 5 having exclusively PVC rainwater goods.
This terrace does not appear on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map, but may have been built shortly afterwards. According to information provided by the owner of Number 3, the houses are believed to have been constructed in 1860.
