Description
The Village Inn is a two storey terraced public house located at the northern end of Main Street in Kircubbin. It is of probable eighteenth century origin, with a sign proclaiming its establishment in 1764, a date supported by the earliest deeds concerning the property which date from the eighteenth century. A building is also shown on this site on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1834.
The south-west facing front elevation has a timber panelled entrance door positioned right of centre, with three modern windows in mock 'olde worlde' style, the window to the far right being substantially larger than the other two. A long timber painted pub sign is positioned above the windows and door. To the right of the entrance door is a flat arch coach doorway with a large timber panelled door. The first floor has four modern three-pane timber windows, with a traditional projecting pub sign between the first and second windows and an internally illuminated PVC sign between the third and fourth windows. Spotlights are mounted to the right of each first floor window. The façade is finished in roughcast render with a short chamfered plinth. A large full-height gabled return with a flat-roofed extension extends to the rear. The roof is pitched with Bangor blue slates, two concrete block chimney stacks and four solar panels. Cast iron gutters and downpipes are present.
The property comprises the amalgamation of two former properties, numbers 34 and 36. A photograph from the W.A. Green Collection (now held at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum) from circa 1910 shows that number 34 was the original inn and had a doorway in the place of what is now the second window from the left. The large window to the far left, despite appearing enlarged at first glance, has been this size at least since the date of this photograph. The interior is largely modern.
