Description
Thompson's Hall is a relatively plain, two-storey gabled building of 1904, located on the southern side of the western end of Mill Street, to the west of Comber town centre. The building was formerly used as a further education college and is now abandoned and in poor condition.
The north-facing front facade features a dilapidated timber-sheeted door set in a segmental opening with a moulded surround, located to the far right. To the left of the doorway are four unevenly spaced window openings with segmental heads and moulded surrounds, all now boarded up. A flat-arched vehicle entrance with timber-sheeted double doors is situated to the far left. The first floor mirrors the ground floor with five boarded-up window openings. The lower half of the facade was originally finished in shallow channelled rusticated render; the upper half, in plain render. However, large sections of the render have fallen off, particularly on the first floor. A scratch coat is visible on the far left of the first floor, but a large central section remains unrendered, revealing brick construction. An eaves course and moulded in/out quoins are present on the right side.
The west gable abuts a neighbouring building, with its exposed section being blank. The lower half of this gable is predominantly sandstone, while the remainder is brickwork, suggesting a possible incorporation of an older wall or earlier building fabric. The east gable is finished in lined render and contains two first-floor windows, resembling those on the front facade, but retaining remains of sash frames with horizontal glazing bars. To the left (south), this facade merges with the eastern face of a two-storey, flat-roofed section, which has a first-floor window matching the gable design. The rear of the building is largely obscured by tree growth, but an Ordnance Survey map from 1967 indicates a significant size, potentially including a courtyard.
The main section of the building has a roof covered in natural slate with two brick chimney stacks set back from the gables, and cast iron guttering to the front. A former mill race is located to the east side of the building.
A broken plaque, originally affixed to the front facade, identified the building as ‘Thompson’s Hall’ and stated a construction date of 1904. The building operated as a local further education college from the 1960s until its recent abandonment.
