Description

Ivy Grove is a large, formal, two-story farmhouse, likely dating to the 1870s or later. It is situated to the east of Dunevly Road, approximately 1.5 miles north of Portaferry. The exterior is currently finished with limestone chip render, and features PVC window frames. Large, modern, flat-roofed extensions have been added to the rear and north side of the building.

The front, or west-facing, elevation is symmetrical. A central timber panel door is set within an elliptical arch opening, featuring patterned glass in a fanlight and two-pane sidelights. The doorway is surrounded by a narrow, smooth cement border. Two-pane PVC windows, designed to mimic sliding sash and case windows but operating as tilt and turn, flank the door; similar windows are evenly spaced across the first floor. All windows are framed by narrow, smooth cement surrounds. The south gable has a window similar to those on the ground floor front, while the north gable incorporates a large, flat-roofed ground-floor extension with a large two-pane PVC window. Further two-story and single-story flat-roofed extensions extend from the rear of the house. The east-facing elevations of these extensions have one window each on the ground and first floors. The north face of the single-story extension features a door to the left and a window to the right, while the two-story portion has a single first-floor window. All windows in the extensions are modern and PVC. The main roof is hipped and covered with concrete tiles, topped with two central yellow brick chimney stacks featuring dentilled corbelling and uniform pots. PVC gutters and downspouts are also present. Modern farm buildings and silos are situated nearby.

Although buildings are depicted on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1860 for this location, the house’s design indicates construction likely occurred around the 1870s. References to primary sources include Ordnance Survey maps from 1834, 1860, and 1899-1900, along with valuations from 1838 and 1861, all held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).
