Description
This is a two-storey terrace of approximately 1900. It is located on the north end of Main Street in Kircubbin, Newtownards, County Down. Originally comprising three dwellings, numbers 43 and 45 have been altered to serve as an office and shop respectively, and the group as a whole possesses limited architectural merit.
The front elevation, facing northeast, features a mix of altered facades. Number 47 has a sliding sash window with a simple moulded surround on the left and a timber panelled front door with a similar surround and keystone on the right. Number 45 has a modern shop front with a glazed door to the left and a large shop window to the right, surmounted by a large PVC sign. Number 43 has a small facade with a modern office front featuring a plain timber door on the left and a large fixed window on the right, with a blank timber signboard above. The first-floor windows of number 47 extend over the shop at number 45, displaying four windows mirroring those on the ground floor. Number 43 has a similar first-floor window, though the upper pane has been boarded up. A continuous cill course runs along the entire first floor of the terrace. The northwest gable of number 43 is blank but curves inward towards the rear. A two-storey gabled return is visible at the rear of numbers 45 and 47, alongside a smaller flat-roofed extension with modern windows and doors serving the rear of the whole terrace. The front facade is finished in plain render with chamfered quoins and a plinth, all painted. The exposed gable and rear are finished in lined render but remain unpainted. All buildings share a pitched roof covered in Bangor blue slates and feature three yellow brick chimney stacks. A large warehouse or workshop with a curved roof is located at the rear of the terrace.
A photograph taken circa 1910 shows the terrace without the shop and office, indicating that these are later additions. The brick construction, the curved wall at the rear, and the detailing on the doors and windows suggest a construction date around 1900.
