Description
This is a late 19th-century mortuary building designed by the prominent Irish architect John Lanyon as part of the County Antrim Lunatic Asylum at Holywell, constructed between 1880 and 1899. It is now used as the Transport Office for Holywell Hospital. Although originally intended as part of a larger hospital complex of architectural interest, it stands separate from the main buildings and has lost some of its original features.
The building is a single-story structure with symmetrical front and rear elevations, constructed from red brick. The main entrance faces south. The roof is hipped and covered with green slate laid in regular courses, featuring serrated terracotta ridge tiles and a central ventilator. The ventilator has a swept lead base supporting an elliptically arched, timber-louvred section, topped with a square ogee copper dome surmounted by a ball finial. Two red brick chimneys, each with a moulded stringcourse, cornice, and modern chimney pots, are present. A moulded cast iron gutter runs along the eaves. The walls are red brick with a moulded brick cornice, stringcourses, and a projecting brick plinth. The windows are rectangular timber frames with 8 panes fixed within, each with elliptically arched, moulded edges. The main entrance now has a modern flush timber door with a plywood panelled sidelight and a two-light fanlight. The side and rear elevations feature a dentil cornice, replaced on the front elevation with a plain brick eaves course. The west elevation is blank. The rear elevation has four windows similar to those on the front; a PVC soil pipe is also visible. The east elevation incorporates a small, centrally projecting block with a hipped roof mirroring the main building; it contains a small window matching the other windows. A lower, flat-roofed store is situated in the rear corner, with a flush timber door on the north side and a bricked-up rectangular window opening on the east side; a modern metal flue pipe is also present.
The building sits within the grounds of Holywell Hospital, to the north of the main driveway and screened from view by a large hedge. Access is via a tarmac driveway bordered by grassed areas. The rear of the building looks out onto grassy fields and trees.
