Holywell House, Holywell Hospital, 60 Steeple Road, Antrim, Co Antrim, BT41 2RJ

Holywell House is a late 19th-century red brick house designed in a plain Queen Anne style by the architect John Lanyon, in association with the Holywell Hospital complex. It was originally intended as a residence for the Medical Superintendent of the County Antrim Lunatic Asylum, built between 1894 and 1899.

The house is two storeys and has an asymmetrical layout. It features hipped roofs covered with green slates, serrated terracotta ridge tiles, terracotta finials, and panelled chimneys. Elliptically arched window openings now contain modern PVC fixed lights and top-hung vents, replacing the original timber sash windows. Moulded cast iron gutters and rectangular cast iron downpipes are also present. The main entrance is located within a gabled porch on the west side. The original entrance area has been altered, with a previous porch or conservatory removed, brickwork patched, and a modern concrete ramp installed leading to the front door. A projecting moulded brick stringcourse at ground floor cill level has been cut short on either side of the entrance area.

The building now serves as hospital offices and ceased to be a residence for the Medical Superintendent in 1967, subsequently becoming a Nurses Training School. It stands within the grounds of Holywell Hospital, separated from the main complex by a tarmac road. Access is via a tarmac driveway, and the house is surrounded by lawns with mature shrubs and trees.
