Kilbegs Cemetery, Milltown Road, Kilbegs, Antrim, Co Antrim

Kilbegs Cemetery is a graveyard established around 1803-1804, located on Milltown Road in Kilbegs, County Antrim. It was provided by Lord O’Neill following the closure of a private burial ground within Shane's Castle park. The earliest memorial dates to 1807.

The graveyard is rectangular and enclosed by walls constructed of basalt rubble. The front entrance faces north and features circular piers with shallow, conical cement-rendered caps. A modern iron gate with spearheads is set on a modern square steel post with a finial. The front boundary wall has concrete saddle-back copings, while the other walls are roughly coursed in places and otherwise constructed of uncoursed rubble. A section of the east boundary wall, at the south end, was later raised to form a segmental gable relating to an outbuilding of the neighbouring property.

The interior is largely grassed, with several mature yew trees and cast iron railings marking some enclosures. The memorials within the graveyard date from at least 1807. The graveyard was initially marked as ‘Shane’s Castle New Grave Yard’ on Ordnance Survey maps of 1829 & 32 and 1858, before being subsequently referred to simply as ‘Cemetery’.

The graveyard is situated in a rural setting, surrounded by open agricultural land and set back slightly from the road with a grass verge in front.
