Description

This is a wall-mounted post box dating from the reign of King Edward VII (1901-1910), built into the front wall of a house of a similar date. The post box is made of cast iron and inscribed with ‘ER VII’; it is identified as letter box no. BT41 24.

The house is two-storeys high, with a slated roof, wet dash rendered walls, and arched timber sliding sash windows with 2 over 2 panes and horns on each floor. The main entrance is a rectangular, glazed, flush timber door with a plain fanlight. Side and rear elevations are of similar character, and the building has PVC rainwater goods.

The post box was manufactured to a standard design and installed during the Edward VII period. The house itself appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1921, but not earlier maps from 1857, suggesting it was constructed in the early 20th century, contemporary with the post box. The building is situated facing directly onto the street, within a conservation area.
