Description
This is a mid-19th century building, originally built as the office for the goods yard of the Belfast and Ballymena Railway Company. It was designed by company engineer Charles Lanyon and later became associated with the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway. The goods yard closed in the 1970s.
The building is a small, single-story structure built of basalt rubble with red brick dressings. It features a roof of Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses and a red brick chimney. The front, facing southwest, has a triplet of semi-circular arched windows with a projecting stone cill. The windows originally contained 3-pane fixed lights, but these are now missing. Shaped timber bargeboards overhang on shaped timber brackets. A rectangular doorway, brick-dressed and containing an iron plated door, is located in the side gable. A side elevation facing the former yard includes a wall of red brick with a triplet of round arched windows, and one rectangular window. One end gable is obscured by overgrown bushes.
The building is situated on the corner of a road, within the built-up area of Antrim and in the corner of a yard that formerly bordered the railway line. This yard once contained a number of railway buildings, including a weighbridge, a goods store, a two-story stabling block, and a station master's house, all of which have now been demolished. A surviving main yard building, documented in a 1971 survey, was a rectangular structure built of coursed random blackstone rubble with brick dressings and a hipped slated roof. The building is of industrial archaeological interest.
