Abbotscroft Garden Village, Doagh Road, Newtownabbey, Co. Antrim, BT37 9QU

A development of two-storey terraced houses and apartment blocks dating from the late 1940s, constructed in the Modern style. The scheme was designed by E. Prentice Mawson & Sons for Ulster Garden Villages, Ltd. The houses are characterised by white painted rendered walls, flat roofs, and some pedimented doorways. The layout remains intact, although the development’s architectural coherence has been diminished by alterations to the detailing of many buildings, including changes to window glazing patterns and façade colours. The development comprises two-storey semi-detached houses in the Modern Movement style, with the exception of the pedimented doorways, and a “civic” area consisting of three large four-storey blocks of flats or apartments with shops on the ground floor, laid out in a formal manner fronting the main road. The buildings were constructed between 1949 and 1950. The designer was specifically E. Prentice Mawson, operating from London and Lancaster. Despite representing a good piece of post-war housing design, the development is not of sufficient historical or architectural interest to be included on the list.
