Description

Ashcott House is a country house that was later used as a school and is now empty. It was built in the mid-18th century, with some additions and alterations from the 19th century. The exterior features stucco that is scribed to resemble ashlar, with the ground floor made of rusticated ashlar that is colourwashed. The building has rusticated ashlar quoins, wide bracketed eaves, and an asbestos slate roof, with an ashlar stack on the left and rendered stock on the right. There are plain bands at the first and second floor levels.

The house has three storeys and a symmetrical frontage with two bays on the outer sides and one bay in the center. It features nine and twelve-pane sash windows set in moulded architraves with slightly cambered heads and emphasized keys. The center of the first floor has a Venetian window in a similar surround, consisting of three panes on each side and thirteen in the middle. The center of the second floor has a segmental-headed sash window.

The central door opening has paired three-panelled doors, with the top two panels glazed, set in a semi-circular head opening with an architrave and a fanlight featuring radiating glazing bars. There is a projecting flat-roofed porch that does not conform to the main style. On each side of the house, there is a single-bay wing that is set back; the left wing has a hipped double Roman tile roof, while the right wing has a slate roof, both featuring rusticated ashlar quoins. The sash windows in these wings conform to the main style, except for one on the left that has four panes. There are two large semi-circular head openings on the left return.

Inside, there are two fireplaces and some ornamental plasterwork. There is a range of outbuildings at the rear, but they are not considered to be of special interest.
