Description

Hassage Manor is a house with a mid-17th century west wing, a south porch, and an east wing dated 1677, as inscribed in the gable of the porch. It was restored in 1982/83. The south elevation features a west wing constructed of rubble with a slate roof and a steep stone gable containing a single window, a modern casement. A central two-storey porch has a 4-centred arch doorcase under a hood mould, a keyed oval window above, a date panel, a small oval window to the side, and a studded plank door within a moulded architrave. The east wing is of coursed squared rubble with a concrete tiled hipped roof. It has two storeys and attic dormers, incorporating cross windows with ogee and ovolo mouldings and keyed oval dormer windows. The north elevation shows recessed projections of both the west and east wings, with a north porch tower of three storeys. The east wing has 6-pane glazing bar sash windows. The west wing possesses casement windows, including one with an ovolo moulded mullion. The north porch tower includes a six-panel door with fluted pilasters, blocked side-lights, a voussoired lintel, a flat stone hood on carved consoles and a four-light cross window above. The library, located in the north-east room, has a large carved fireplace with Ionic pilasters and a decorative frieze, which is partially blocked and incorporates an early 18th century fireplace. The drawing room, in the south-east, has a recently uncovered ceiling with ogee/ovolo moulding, and a stone fireplace with a lugged architrave and pulvinated frieze. A mid to late 17th century oak staircase features pierced, carved flat balusters, pendants, and finials, along with three inner studded plank doors and strap hinges with fleur de lys ends. A bedroom in the south-west contains a 17th century panelled cupboard with a decorative frieze and a bolection-moulded fireplace.
