Description
Christ Church is a Grade II* listed church built in 1824 by H E Goodridge for the Rev Charles Daubney, Archdeacon of Salisbury. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and has a slate roof, showcasing a Free Gothic style with some Geometric and Decorated details. It features a nave and chancel with four and one bays respectively, tall two-light windows, blind aisles, and prominent buttresses on each side and at the angles, all topped with weathered gabled caps. At the west end, there are twin polygonal turrets with stepped spires, along with two small spirelets at the east end.
Inside, the church continues the flamboyant style, with a four-bay arcade on each side of the nave, featuring chamfered four-centred arches. A gallery at the west end is supported by one wide and two narrow arches in a similar style. The stone altar includes a reredos with a gabled hood adorned with crockets, and there are niches on either side of the east window with metal decalogue plaques. Monuments flanking the altar commemorate the Daubney family, particularly one on the right dedicated to Archdeacon Daubney, which is bordered by two large allegorical statues in niches. The tall chancel arch consists of three orders, and the chancel has a plaster rib vault with plain stained glass. The church also contains coeval pews, choir stalls, and a font, all designed in a similarly expressive style.
