Description

A block of seven cottages built around 1818. The cottages are rendered and colourwashed, and likely originally had thatched roofs to the ends, with the remainder having Bridgwater patent interlocking clay tiles. The design is a straight row, with projecting gables in the centre and at both ends, those ends featuring swept curved ridges. Brick chimney stacks are mostly in their original form.

Each cottage has two storeys, with one bay per house, except for number 42. Number 36 has a segmental projection to the west gable, with two storeys, steel casement windows, and a doorway in the projection. Number 37 has late 20th century casement windows and a rendered and tiled porch. Number 38 is similar, with steel casements and a tiled porch. Number 39 has horizontal bar casements, an added window to the first floor and attic, and a projecting porch with glazing and tiling. Number 42 has a timber porch with a 1950s glazed door and steel casement windows. Number 41 features late 20th century timber casements and a glazed and tiled porch. Finally, number 40 has 1930s steel casement windows, with a door in the east gable.

The interiors have not been inspected.

Newtown is a planned layout dating to around 1818, initially comprising approximately 80 thatched cottages; it is believed to have originated as a political tactic. Although altered, this terrace retains some original details not found elsewhere and helps to illustrate the original concept of the development. The terrace is primarily included for its group value.
