Description
Crackmore Lodge, along with its gate piers and gates, is a pair of lodges built in the 19th century. They are constructed from Ham stone ashlar and feature hipped Welsh slate roofs, with rendered brick chimney stacks. Each lodge is a single storey with two bays. The east elevation includes windows with plain mullions and two transoms in architraved surrounds, creating six-unit windows with diagonal pattern glazing bars. The inner and facing ends are angled to points to highlight the gateway, which is marked by 600mm square ashlar piers topped with heavy mouldings. The cast iron gates have a top rail that curves upwards to the center, spiked tops, diamond middle rails, and an ornate bottom rail. There may have been an older building on this site, as there is an extensive cellar connecting both lodges. Additionally, beneath the drive and gates, there is a subterranean well house containing a well with a diameter of 2 meters, the date of which is uncertain. This lodge serves as one of the main entrances to Sherborne Park in Dorset.
