Description
The churchyard cross, located 2 metres south of the porch of the Church of the Holy Ghost, dates from the 14th century. It is made of red sandstone with a Ham stone shaft. The cross features an octagonal calvary with three steps, a square socket with chamfered corners, and steep convex broaches. The octagonal shaft has a three-bay crocketed niche on the west front that contains figures, although they are much eroded. According to Pooley, the larger central figure represents a bishop, with St. John the Baptist on the left and the prioress of the convent of Studeley, who were the holders of the Manor of Crowcombe, on the right. Pooley describes it as "an exceedingly rich example of Fourteenth century work." The cross is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 242).
