Description

Smocombe House is likely a dower house for the Enmore Castle estate and is now used as a private residence. It features early 19th-century characteristics, although its core is older. The building is constructed of painted rubble and has fretwork bargeboards, a fishscale tile roof, and slender brick stacks with moulded stone caps, arranged diagonally in groups on brick bases. The architectural style is Gothick.

The house has an irregular plan and is set into a hillside on two levels, comprising one storey and attic as well as two storeys and attic. The entrance facade has a layout of 1:2:1 bays, with the outer bays on the left and right under front-facing gables, the left gable projecting slightly. The outer ground floor windows have 4-centred heads and are 2-light casements, each set in a shallow recess. The window on the right has a recess with a 4-centred head, while the left has corbels above it. Each gable features a blank window. The central two bays include gabled dormers in the attic with 2-light iron casements that have leaded lights, and there are two pairs of French windows on the ground floor, with the right pair having a 4-centred head. The returns and rear of the house are styled similarly, and the ground slopes away to the left. Inside, there are features from the same period, including a staircase.
