Description

Enmore County Primary School, believed to have opened in 1810, is said to be the first Free National School in England. The current structure dates from around 1850 to 1860, with some later additions and alterations. It is built of random rubble with brick dressings and features a triple Roman tile roof. The brick stacks are set diagonally on rubble bases, arranged both singly and in groups, and the architectural style is Tudoresque. The building is a single storey with an attic, consisting of three bays on each side, each topped with a front-facing gable of varying sizes, while the outer bays project. The windows are arranged as two and three-light openings in dressed stone surrounds, with two central windows featuring transoms and stopped labels. There is a small gabled dormer to the right of the center, containing a single-light window in a dressed stone surround. Each window has casements with horizontal glazing bars. The school has two door openings with brick surrounds and plank doors. The forecourt is enclosed by a brick wall.
