Description

The Manor is a rectory, now a dwelling, built in 1840 for the Reverend Fitzhardinge Berkeley Portman. It features squared and coursed blue lias stone with Ham stone dressings and slate roofs that are both hipped and gabled, set behind parapets. A large external stack is located at the north-east corner of the entrance facade, with clustered stacks in the center and to the west. The building has a double pile design with a long service wing to the west.

The entrance front, facing north, is two storeys high and consists of a 2:1:2:1 bay arrangement, with the service wing set back to the right. It has chamfered string courses and moulded plinths, narrow sash windows with horizontal bars, and a large external stack on the left flanked by windows. A full-height gabled porch features an oriel window with an apron and a square hood mould above a Tudor arch head doorway, which has half-glazed ribbed double doors. To the right are 2 and 3-light windows beneath a gabled parapet, leading to a cross wing at the end bay. The left return has two bays with a full-height canted bay, while the south front is long and asymmetrical with a gabled design.

The interior has not been seen. This building was constructed as the rectory by Reverend Portman, who also rebuilt Curland and Bickenhall Church, the latter of which was relocated closer to the rectory, now known as Neroche Parish Hall. Reverend Portman was the brother of Lord Portman, who owned all of Staple Fitzpaine, and he also held the benefices of Stoke St Mary and Thurlbear.
