Description

The boundary wall to the southeast of the Bishop's Palace garden, adjacent to Tor Street, is likely from the 18th or 19th century, with repairs made in the 20th century. It is constructed of rubble, with stone or concrete plain copings. The main section of the wall, which serves as the boundary with Tor Street, rises to approximately 2.5 meters in height at the southern end, following the slope of the road. After about 9 meters, the wall steps down by approximately 300 millimeters and continues, curving slightly to follow the road line for a total length of about 135 meters, including a set-back with a plank door near the Palace Stream bridge. At the southern end, the wall returns to the southwest corner of the moat, extending about 110 meters, with a short return at an obtuse angle towards the moat. There are two small steps in the coping level towards the eastern end, and the wall generally maintains a height of around 2.5 meters. Near the western end, there is a broad pair of plank gates. At the eastern end, the wall returns towards the Cathedral, running approximately 90 meters and partially forming the southern boundary to The Rib; some of this section appears to have been rebuilt in the late 20th century. The wall is significant as a townscape feature, particularly as it defines the western side of Tor Street as it enters the urban area of the city.
