Description
Upton House is a detached farmhouse dating from around 1700, with modifications and extensions made in the 19th century. It is constructed of Ham stone in a near-ashlar style and features a clay pantiled roof with stepped coped gables and brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys with an attic and consists of seven bays, with the first three bays appearing to be later additions. The windows are casements with horizontal bars, featuring three lights in bay one and upper bays two and three, while below bays two and three there is a four-light window, and all other windows are two-light. Continuous labels run above both levels of bays four to seven, with the lower labels stepped up over each opening. In lower bay three, there is a wide six-panel door in a Regency style, set in a heavy frame and sheltered by an open timber porch supported by two simple Doric stone columns and topped with a Welsh slated pitched roof. Additional casements are found on the south gable, including an upper window with a hood and an iron-framed opening light, as well as an attic window with a hood. At the rear, there is a lean-to extension. The interior has not been seen. Approximately two metres west of the house is a low stone kerb with cast-iron railings about one metre high, featuring acanthus bud tops and arch-braced standards, along with matching side gates next to the porch, all of which enhance the setting of the house and the streetscape.
