Description
Buckrells is a detached house dating from the earlier 17th century, constructed of ham stone that is mostly near-ashlar with dressings, although it is cut and squared at the north end. The roof is made of Welsh slate with a stone slate base course between coped gables, and there are stone slab chimney stacks. The building has an 'L' plan, is two storeys high with attics, and features four bays.
The windows are volo-moulded with mullions set in wave-mould recesses. In bay 1, which is the end gable of an east crosswing, there is a 3-light window with a label at attic level. The north return has a similar window without a label on the first floor, although the mullion has been removed. Bay 2 contains a 2-light window below, while bay 3 has a 4-light window below and a 3-light window above. Bay 4 features 3-light windows on both levels, with the lower window having a label. Bays 2 and 3 share a label that steps up over the bay 3 window and again over the cambered-arched doorway to the right of bay 3, which has incised spandrels and is set in a wave-mould rectangular recess, with a fanlight cut into the lintel above. There is a single matching window in the west gable and several on the southern flank.
The interior has not been seen. The house was known as a farmhouse by 1640 and was reduced in size due to roadworks in the 1960s.
