Description

Park House is a country house built around 1925, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Reginald McKenna. It incorporates the service court of an earlier 18th-century house. The building is constructed from Bath stone ashlar and features a coved eaves cornice and a stone slate roof with three squared ashlar off-ridge stacks. It has a "U"-shaped plan and exhibits mannerist classicism, standing two stories tall with a basement and seven bays. The facade includes corner Tuscan pilasters and plaster between each bay, with sash windows featuring glazing bars set in reveals and slightly emphasized keystones. The floor openings have moulded sills, and the first-floor openings have rectangular projections directly beneath them.

The central door opening is framed by a moulded stone architrave with a Gibbs surround, topped with a pulvinated frieze and a broken pediment that has a large projecting "key." The returns of the building consist of four bays. At the rear, the wings form a cloistered quadrangle that retains some elements of the earlier house, including elliptical-headed archways on the ground floor and blank window openings to the east. There is also another door opening with a Gibbs surround and a three-quarter glazed door. Inside, the house features plasterwork, panelling, doors, and fireplaces designed by Sir Herbert Jekyll.
