Description

Castle Cary Primary School is a school building dated 1840, with an extension added in 1876. It is constructed from Cary stone that is cut and squared, with Doulting stone dressings. The earlier section features a hipped double Roman concrete tile roof, while the later part has a plain clay tiled gabled roof, along with brick chimney stacks.

The older section, located to the north, is two storeys high and has five bays, with added side porches. Below, there are three-light stone mullioned windows under square labels, which now have plain casements. The center window is higher and features a transom. A string course separates the upper storey, which is two bays wide and balanced between bays two and four. This upper section has matching two-light windows set under a plain ashlar coped gable, which is bedded on the string course and includes a date plaque from 1840.

Inside, the school retains cast iron columns that support the upper storey and timber-encased stairs leading to what is presumably the masters' accommodation. The 1876 extension is of lesser interest; it is a single storey with seven bays, featuring gables on bays two, four, and six, and entrances on bays three and five, the latter of which is now blocked. The windows in this section are three-light chamfered mullioned without labels, with transoms in bays two and six, and two windows without transoms in bay four. The rafters are exposed at the eaves, and there is a date plaque from 1876 on the center gable. The building was originally constructed as a National School.
