Description
The Somerset and Bath Constabulary Headquarters is the former County Gaol located behind the Police Station. It was originally built in 1754 and later enlarged in 1815 and 1843. The building is a long three-storey structure with a higher polygonal tower attached to the rear. The third wing of the T-shaped building has been demolished. It features red rubble walls with ashlar window dressings and slate roofs. The gable end parapets have kneelers, and the polygonal tower has a cap with deep eaves. On the left side, there are sash windows with glazing bars under mostly cambered stone voussoir lintels. The right side has shorter windows. The gable end to the west has three tall round-headed windows with stone and brick surrounds. The side walls of the polygonal tower have four-light windows with stone mullions and a sill band. The Somerset and Bath Constabulary Headquarters and Block 'B' to the southeast form a group.
