Description
A detached cottage, possibly originating in the 15th century, stands alongside a timber-framed building on its south-west corner. The cottage is constructed from local lias stone, covered with whitewash, and has a half-hipped thatched roof with brick chimney stacks. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring an irregular arrangement of six bays. The windows are mostly 3-light casements of an early design, with rectangular leaded glass and some iron-framed opening lights. Window details include a 4-light window in the second bay and a 2-light window in the sixth. There are attic windows to the right of the second bay, the fourth bay, the right of the fifth bay, and the sixth bay – the last two of which are 2-light and set within swept thatched dormers. A projecting porch with a catslide roof is located in front of the third bay, featuring an early boarded door set in a heavy frame. A further boarded door is situated to the right of the sixth bay. A further leaded casement window is present in the north gable. The building on the south-west corner is timber-framed and clad in timber, with a half-hipped thatched roof and may incorporate earlier timber framing. The interior is reported to have a through-passage plan, with evidence of a central open-roofed hall featuring a jointed-cruck-framed roof and smoke-blackened rafters. The cottage likely underwent modifications and additions in the 17th century.
