Description
This is an early 19th century shop with a row of six cottages situated to the rear, located on South Street, Crewkerne, and including Bowditch Row. The shop is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, with lower courses of Ham Hill stone, and has a slate roof, with brick stacks integrated into the party walls. The plan is a double-depth arrangement, with each cottage featuring a single room at the front.
The front elevation of the shop (facing south) has a two-window range. It features 2/2-pane sash windows on the first floor, a small 20th-century window on the ground floor far right, and a moulded shop fascia. The shop front itself has 4 lights of 2 panes below a 3-light casement with lowered cills, and a small 20th-century window to the far left. A planked door is flanked by a 2-light window to the left and a 4-light window to the right.
The rear cottages, forming Bowditch Row, are also two storeys high. No.1, located behind the shop, has a two-window range, while the others have a single window. Flat stone arches are above all window and door openings. The cottages have plank doors and 2-light casements with lowered cills and small panes. Nos. 1 and 2 have 3-light casements.
The interior was only partially inspected. This building serves as a good example of a row of early 19th century cottages.
