Description
This is an early 17th-century house, extended in the mid-19th century and with a late 19th-century outshut added. It is constructed of rubble stone with a double roman tile roof and brick stacks. The outshut is of rubble and brick with a modern roof.
The house is oriented east to west and originally comprised two units, with the western bay being a 19th-century addition. It has a three-room plan, incorporating a central stair. A former stair turret is located in the north-east corner. An outshut is set at right angles to the east end of the front facade, and a mid- to late-20th-century store, carport, and garage are attached to the west end.
The exterior is two storeys high under a pitched roof. The front facade has three irregular bays. A door is positioned to the right of centre, with a plain stone architrave and a modern door. To the left of the door is an early 17th-century tripartite mullioned casement window with ovolo mouldings and a hoodmould. Other openings have stone architraves and timber casements, except for a ground-floor window on the right, which has uPVC frames. The outshut to the right has modern windows and roof coverings. The west side of the house features a modern door and a 20th-century store and garage. The rear has two small ground-floor openings, one with a timber surround, and a bowed stair turret to the left. The roof has coped verges with kneelers, three ridge stacks, and two modern rooflights.
The ground floor is stone-flagged in the west (kitchen) and central rooms. The east room has a modern floor, an inglenook with a 20th-century oak bressumer, and an opening to the back wall revealing a former stair turret. Lateral ceiling beams are covered over in each room. The central stair is of 20th-century construction, and a stair cupboard facing the centre room has iron hinges. A doorway in the kitchen leads through the former end wall of the original two-unit dwelling. This end wall incorporates a sealed chimney breast with plaster removed to expose the bressumer end. The kitchen also has a fireplace with a spalled stone surround, and a timber recessed shelving unit to the left, potentially containing elements from before the 20th century. Upstairs, there are four-panelled doors, a fitted cupboard, and pine floorboards. Roof structures were at least partially replaced in the late 20th century.
