Description

The Falconry at Lodge Farm is a 14th to 15th century cartshed and falconry, currently used as a cowshed and store. It is constructed from rubble Doulting stone and features a moulded string course at first floor level, topped with a stone slate gabled roof. The building has a rectangular plan and is two stories tall, with an east front that includes three windows and a central entrance. The stone window frames are plain and chamfered. The central window is stone mullioned, featuring two trefoil-headed lights and a central quatrefoil opening. On either side of this window are small dovecot openings with corbelled perches. The left dovecot has a hollow chamfer with the Hungerford Arms and badge, while the right has a moulded cornice supported by a mitred head.

The south gable includes a cart entrance that has been blocked, featuring a dripmould above, a plain chamfered stone window frame, and a stone-framed vent to the roof space. The north gable has a single flight of stone steps leading to the first floor entrance, which is framed by a hollow chamfered moulded stone door surround with a pointed arch, along with dovecot openings in the gable apex. The first floor interior is plastered, with a plaster ceiling; the southern end is said to have been partitioned off. The Falconry is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 252).
