Description
Knotts Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse built in the early 19th century. It features a ham stone ashlar facade, with rubble on the sides and rear, and a Welsh slate roof that has a shallow pitch and stepped coped gables, along with brick end chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The sash windows have 16 panes and are set in plain openings with voussoired flat-arched heads. The lower bay 2 includes a six-panelled door beneath a four-unit rectangular fanlight, all within a plain opening, and is topped with a flat stone hood supported by heavy console brackets. There is a single-storey lean-to against the west gable and a two-storey extension on the east gable, which is set lower and features two-light casement windows. A long extension extends to the rear. The interior has not been seen.
About 4 metres south of the farmhouse is the front boundary wall, constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and standing about 1 metre high. It has a stone ashlar plinth and thin coping, with a curved return at the west end leading back to the house. Opposite the entrance door are two small square stone gatepiers topped with moulded bell-hip caps, with two steps between them and no gate. These features enhance the setting of the farmhouse and contribute to the streetscape in the centre of the village. By 1851, this was the largest farm in the village.
