Description

The Rose and Crown Inn is an inn that possibly dates back to the late 17th century, with alterations including rewindowing in the late 18th century and further modifications later on. It is built of ham stone in a near-ashlar style and features a double Roman clay-tiled roof with a steep pitch, complemented by bargeboarded overhung gables and brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and consists of four bays. The windows are beaded mullioned, set in recessed architraves, with all being four-light except for the upper bays one and two, which are three-light. The lower bays one and two share a window, and there is a matching doorway between bays two and three, accessed by two steps. A continuous string mould runs over the ground floor openings, stepping up over the doorway. There is a string at the eaves level on the south gable, which features one 20th-century casement window, while the north gable is plain rendered and colourwashed. The rear of the building has 20th-century extensions. An inn has been recorded in Dinnington since at least 1732.
