Description
The Orchard, also known as Little Orchard, is a detached house dating from the earlier 17th century. It is constructed of near-ashlar ham stone and features a thatched roof with a coped gable on the south side and a plain gable on the north. The house has two storeys and consists of four bays. The windows are reserve-chamfered mullioned types, with three lights in the upper bays 1, 3, and 4, and a two-light window in upper bay 2. The lower windows include a four-light window in bay 1 and five-light windows in bays 3 and 4, all with labels. The windows are rectangular-leaded with iron-framed opening casements, some of which have curl stays. In lower bay 2, there is a 20th-century boarded part-glazed door set in a plain recess. The south gable is plain, while the north gable has 20th-century windows and a later outshut at the rear made of rubble stonework. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to have a three-unit cross-passage plan, a collar-beam trussed roof with scarfed trenched purlins, signs of a former doorway at the rear, and large but modified fireplaces.
In front of the house, approximately 3 meters away, there is a low stone kerbing with wrought-iron railings featuring spear points. These railings have braced standards that support cast urn finials, along with a pair of matching gates opposite the doorway. This boundary treatment contributes to the setting of the house and enhances the street scene.
