Description
The dam between the upper and lower lakes, located 200 meters south of Pondsmead, dates back to the 18th century. It features a hermit's cell, various grottoes, a tunnel, a staircase, and a ruined arch, all cleverly concealed by a fictive cliff. The structure is made of rough-hewn and randomly laid rock, primarily Tufa, which creates picturesque grottoes and ruins. The vaulted hermit's cell, accessible from a landing stage, includes stone seats and a table. The dam also extends to a sluice arrangement that hides subsidiary grottoes and a tunnel. There are romantic winding stairs leading to the upper level, making this an unusually complete survival of its kind.
