Description
The Oakhill and Ashwick War Memorial was erected in 1922, with an additional plaque added after the Second World War. It is constructed from stone and is prominently located in the center of Oakhill. The memorial features a stylised Celtic cross on an octagonal tapered shaft, which is mounted on an octagonal stepped plinth with moulded caps. The front face of the plinth is inscribed with "IN/ MEMORIAM/ 1914-1919," while the rear face includes a quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson: "UNDER THE WIDE AND/ STARRY SKY/ DIG ME A GRAVE AND/ LET ME DIE/ GLAD DID I LIVE AND/ GLADLY DIE/ AND I LAY ME DOWN/ WITH A WILL." The other faces of the plinth display the names of the fallen. The plinth is supported by a two-stepped base made of stone rubble, also octagonal, with the upper step inscribed "1939-1945." Additionally, there are two stone flower holders on the lower step. The memorial is set within a semi-circular paved area, which is surrounded by a low curved wall of stone rubble.
