Description
A block of four cottages, built in 1910 for the Duchy of Cornwall. The cottages are constructed from ham stone, cut and squared, with hipped roofs covered in double Roman clay tiles and brick chimney stacks. The design follows an "H" plan, with two storeys and twelve bays, where the end bays form crosswings. A band course runs between the floors. The windows are sash windows with 12 panes on the lower sashes and 9 panes on the upper sashes, with moulded timber cover moulds to the sashboxes. Small-pane casement windows are located in the returns. Bays 4 and 5, and 8 and 9 feature plain doorways with flat stone hoods supported by simple stone brackets, with boarded doors and four-section rectangular fanlights above. Bays 6 and 7 are punctuated by a rectangular plaque displaying the Prince of Wales' feathers and the date 1910. The entrances to numbers 3 and 9 are situated within the end gables, behind catching sash windows. All downpipes incorporate stackheads displaying the three feathers. The interior of the cottages has not been inspected. Approximately three metres south of the cottages is a boundary wall constructed from cut and squared stone with castellated tops; later 20th-century timber gates are also present, complementing the setting of the houses. This is a well-detailed “out of town” block, demonstrating an interesting contrast with the pair of houses at 15/17 Forth Street, built three years later but in a more sensitive urban setting.
