Description
Dean Farmhouse is a building dating from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. It is constructed from coursed rubble with coped verges, ashlar stacks, and roofs covered in double-Roman tiles and slate. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic. It originally had a 2:1:1:2 bay arrangement, with predominantly two and three-light stone mullioned windows, some of which have labels. The windows generally have wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars, although a first-floor window to the left has a two-light casement in a freestone surround, and a ground-floor window is set within a freestone surround containing an eight-pane sash window. There are two door openings: one has a plank door within a moulded freestone surround, leading to an elaborate ashlar porch with a moulded stone cornice and a flat lead-sheeting roof. The porch features a semi-circular outer door opening with a keystone, a moulded string at impost level, and a fine blank freestone cartouche above. A two-light stone mullioned window sits above the cartouche, with returns featuring single-light openings, some oval and 4-keyed. The other door opening has a plank door and a chamfered freestone surround with a four-centred arch head. Inside, a ground-floor room has a chamfered and stopped ceiling beam, and a fireplace with a broad wooden bressumer. The farmhouse also contains 19th-century features, including fireplaces, and part of the roof may date back to the 17th century.
