Description
Burrow Bridge is a road bridge over the River Parrett, dated 1826. The north parapet was rebuilt in the mid-20th century. It was probably designed by Philip Ilett of Taunton, with John Stone of Yarcombe as the contractor. The bridge is constructed from squared and coursed granite, featuring limestone voussoirs with V joints, granite saddleback coping, and a curved continuous block course of blue lias. The north parapet has steel railings. It has a single span elliptical arch with circular voids in the spandrels to allow tidal waters to pass through. The parapet is swept back and has 12 recessed blank panels facing the river, while the road front features a central inserted panel inscribed 'John Stone Builder Yarcombe 1826'. At approximately 21 meters (68 feet), this bridge is said to be the longest single span masonry road bridge in the county. It served as a toll bridge until 1945.
