Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church built between 1836 and 1838 by Richard Carver, with a chancel arch added in 1888. It features squared and coursed blue lias with Ham stone dressings, slate roofs, and coped verges. The church has a porch with flanking vestries at the liturgical west end, a bell-cote, a four-bay aisleless nave, a north-east organ bay, a south-east chapel, and a chancel. The west end has a gabled bell-cote with a single bell and a rose window, along with a single-storey lean-to roofed porch and flanking vestries. The entrance has clasping buttresses and a projecting gabled centre, with a depressed Tudor arch head doorway featuring double doors. The south front has five lancet windows between stepped buttresses, while the east window consists of three lancets. The north front also has five lancet windows between stepped buttresses.

Inside, the church is rendered, with pointed and chamfered chancel arches and arches between the nave and chapels, which are in two orders. There is a wooden arch with pierced decorative spandrels between the chapels and chancel. The chancel has a ribbed and boarded wagon roof, while the nave features a scissor truss roof with a ridge pole. The interior includes a stained pine dado, pews, and a west end gallery. The altar rails are supported by paired black marble columns, and the sanctuary is adorned with Minton tiles. A Beer stone pulpit with steps is dated 1890, and a lectern is dated 1889. The font is in the Perpendicular style, and there is a 17th-century joint stool in the sanctuary. The church also features fine coeval gothic style lamp brackets, which are painted and gilded cast iron, with two in the chancel and five in the nave. A painted hollow petal statuette of St Michael, approximately 750 mm high, is located in the chancel and dates from around 1900. The parsonage to the south, which is not included in the listing, was also designed by Richard Carver.
