Description
Ivy House is a farmhouse that dates back to the 15th century, with remodels in the 17th century and alterations made in the early 19th and late 20th centuries. The exterior features painted render over chalk and limestone rubble, topped with a pantile roof that has stepped stone copings. There is a rear lateral stack and a brick stack at the right gable end. The building has a three-unit plan with a through passage, originally featuring a late medieval open hall that was given a lateral stack in the 17th century.
It stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range. A front porch, added around 1980, has a lean-to pantile roof and includes a door below a 1980 window, flanked by 1980 French windows. The first floor features late 19th-century two-over-two pane sash windows on each side.
Inside, the late medieval house had low service partitions that were open at the upper level. On the ground floor, the left side has a fireplace against the rear wall with an inglenook, a chamfered lintel, and traces of a filled-in bread oven. The right side also has a fireplace with an inglenook and an arched, chamfered oak lintel. Both rooms have chamfered beams. There are elliptical arches dating from around 1800 to the left of the passage on the ground floor and to the right of the landing on the first floor, along with a staircase from the same period. A heavy planked door is located at the rear of the passage. The roof, dating from around 1800, features tusked tenoned purlins and retains part of three 15th-century jointed crucks that are heavily smoke-blackened. Ivy House is adjacent to No. 2 Crimchard on the left.
