Description
Stowey Lodge is a 19th-century building, constructed in 1850, designed by architect John Norton. It serves as a lodge for St. Audries and is now a dwelling. The structure is made from Sampford Brett red sandstone with Bath stone dressings and features quoins, V-shaped tiles, coped verges, kneelers, and a decorative finial on the south gable end. The east front has large external stepped ashlar and random rubble stacks, while the west gable end features an octagonal ashlar stack with a broached sprocket.
The plan consists of a gabled block oriented north-south, with a gabled west crossing and an entrance located in the angle on the south front. The south front has one and a half storeys with a symmetrical arrangement of bays, all topped with Tudor arched heads and horizontal glazing bars. On the left, there is a gabled single light dormer, and to the right, a 2-light casement window under a hood mould. The ground floor mirrors this with a similar 2-light casement on the left and a crenellated 5-light canted bay on the right. The centre features a Tudor arched doorway with a ledge and plank door, set within a flat-roofed porch that has a moulded cornice and a parapet raised with an inset square panel displaying a coat of arms. Originally, the building was known as Fairfield Lodge. The interior has not been viewed.
