Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed building located on the northwest side of High Street in Wellington. It features a tall west tower with a pinnacled top and a stair turret on the south face, constructed mainly of red sandstone. The church is predominantly from the 15th century and includes a very tall nave with clerestory windows. The short chancel, rebuilt in 1847, has an interesting early tracery design in its east window dating from the 13th century. The south door and porch are either from the 13th or early 14th century. Inside, there is a ceiled wagon roof and two late 18th-century galleries located in the aisles. Notable features also include the fine Popham tomb from 1607.
