Description
Sholers is a cottage that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th century. It underwent extensive modernization in the mid-20th century and was undergoing further renovation at the time of the last survey in April 1983. The building features painted random rubble, likely facing cob, and has a buttressed west end. It has a hipped thatched roof, a large external stone stack on the north front with a diagonal flue to the east, and another stone stack located to the west of the center on the ridge. The plan suggests it was originally an open hall house, which was ceiled in the 16th century, with a late one-bay addition to the east. The main elevation faces south and the cottage is one and a half storeys tall with five bays. It has 20th-century leaded casements and an entrance at the west end accessed by steps leading up to a 20th-century door. The interior was not viewed, but it is said to contain a combination of framed trusses and jointed crucks with wind braces, chamfered beams, and a four-panel compartment ceiling.
