Description
This large barn, located in the farmyard to the north of Burrow Hill Farmhouse, dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble, ashlar, brick, and some weatherboarding, topped with plain and double-Roman tile roofs. The barn is a single storey and consists of eleven bays.
The left two bays serve as a rubble-built store, featuring a two and a three-light stone-mullioned window with moulded labels, and a central door opening with a four-centred arch and a plank door. Adjacent to this is the hay barn, which has nine bays and an open frontage supported by intermediate brick piers on ashlar bases, along with some weatherboarding. The rear also has additional weatherboarding.
Above the left door opening is a carved heraldic lion of medieval design, which may have been reused from Muchelney Abbey after its Dissolution. The left return of the barn displays three similar lions and a carved head. Inside, there are six trusses with jointed crucks and arch-bracing, while the other trusses were renewed in the 19th century.
