Description
The Former Great Western Railway Station in Ilminster was built around 1868. It features Flemish-bond brick with limestone dressings around the windows, a plinth-top, a platband at impost-level, and quoins at all corners, including those of the chimney-stacks. The hipped slate roof has stone ridges and wide, boarded eaves supported by cast-iron brackets. The building has a truncated H-shape plan and is a single-storey structure with a symmetrical four-window range. All windows are square at the base, with four panes below semicircular-arched tops that have two panes. The surrounds are plain, with small consoles supporting the sills, and the jambs step out at the top to meet the imposts. The window frames are from the 20th century. The bays on either side are stepped forward and have one window each. The central double doors, also from the 20th century, have a semicircular overlight and are flanked by similar windows. The chimney stacks at each end of the ridge have been extended with 20th-century bricks. The station was part of the Bristol and Exeter line when it opened in 1868. The interior has not been inspected.
