Description
The Circular Memorial Chapel at Taunton Deane Crematorium was built in 1963 by architects Potter and Hare. It features local random rubble stone in white, grey, and brown, with a concrete cantilevered canopy at the entrance and a conical copper roof with deep eaves. The chapel has a circular plan with a projecting entrance on the west side. The walls of the chapel are unpunctured, and there is a narrow clerestory strip between the walls and the eaves, where the window-lights zig-zag inward and outward, with the cill inside zig-zagging up and down.
Inside, the chapel has a simple design with an exposed timber boarded roof that rises into a conical shape and exposed stone rubble walls. A cross by sculptor Geoffrey Clarke is also present. This chapel is an integral part of the Taunton Deane Crematorium Group, which includes the chapel and attached ancillary areas. The building is noted for its beautiful detailing in local materials and its shape, which suggests a crusader tent.
